Single-Estate Washed Arabica

Josuma imports Washed Arabica coffees from a small number of well-managed estates in prime coffee locations. Some of these farms grow only one variety; others multiple cultivars. When more than one bean variety is grown, Josuma insists that the plantation segregate beans from specific cultivars during picking, sorting, and processing and pays a premium to ensure that. Because cup characteristics vary from variety to variety, we believe it’s important to preserve the unique characteristics of each for the end-consumer’s ultimate enjoyment.

These Washed Arabicas are very balanced coffees. They have medium acidity and medium body. Many also display spiciness in the cup, a uniquely Indian trait that may result from the spices (e.g. pepper, cardamom) that Indian growers routinely plant amidst their coffee trees. These beans are extremely versatile with the attributes that extract in hot water also displaying in cold brew applications.

Josuma sources its Washed Arabica coffees from eight estates, all located in Karnataka State. Partner estates include Bettadakhan Estate, Chinnenahalli EstateKalledevarapura Estate and Woodway Estate in the Bababudangiris Region, Badnekhan EstateKerkeicoondah Estate, and Merthi Subbangudigy Estate in the Chikmagalur Region, and Harley Estate in the Manjarabad Region.  In recent years, Badnekhan took a national first place and Bettadakhan took a regional first place in the Flavour of India/Fine Cup competition (India’s equivalent to Cup of Excellence, held most years in conjunction with the European Specialty Coffee Expo).
